The NBA: March 2013 Position Battle – The Top 5 Small Forwards Right Now

LeBron James continues to be miles ahead of the competition (including Kevin Durant), while golden oldies Paul Pierce and Shawn Marion make appearances! It’s a curious collection of the young and old!

Note: All of the following stats are based on the last five games of each player’s team as computed by HoopsStats.com.

5. Shawn Marion (DAL) - 13.0ppg, 9.5rpg. 3.0apg, 1.5spg, .600 FG%. .500 3pt%. 21.5 EFF
The Matrix came back from injury to record an 11-13 double-double versus Boston and 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals against Utah. Both games were won by Dallas.

4. Carmelo Anthony (NYK) - 28.7ppg, 7.3rpg, 1.0spg, 1.0bpg, 21.7 EFF
After missing three games, Melo came back to score AT LEAST 21 in each of his last three encounters, which are all NYK wins by the way. This includes scoring a combined 65 points in two straight games against the Raptors.

The NBA: Oldies But Goodies – The Top Three Old Guys in the Association

Let’s put things in perspective here.

Around the same time Tim Duncan entered Wake Forest University in 1993, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist came into this world. Now MKG is a little over 19 years old, averaging 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game as a rookie for the Charlotte Bobcats. Meanwhile, Duncan, now in his fifteenth season in the pro game, is still lording it over the opposition, norming nearly 18 points, more than 10 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per outing. Statistically speaking, and despite being a few months away from his 37th birthday, he’s having his best season since ’07-’08.

Tim Duncan is still too good to be called old, even
if he IS nearly 37 years old.

Duncan, however, doesn’t have a monopoly on the “oldie but goodie” tag. Two Boston Celtics have also been defying Father Time to continue towing the Big Green – Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Once a high-flying big man who could get past slower 4s and 5s with impunity, Kevin Garnett has had to redefine his game since becoming a Celtic in 2007. The big guy blow-bys have become few and far between, and the 15-20-foot jumpers have become more ubiquitous.

That is, after all, the way to survive in this game. One’s athleticism can only take him so far. Eventually, he will have to adapt, and there’s hardly a better example than KG. His current numbers: 15.4ppg, 7.0rpg, 2.0apg, while shooting 53.8% from the field. For any guy, those stats would already be mighty impressive, but for someone who was drafted straight out of HS in 1995 – he IS the poster boy for prep-to-pros – those stats are outright amazing.

KG’s own teammate, Paul Pierce, is also another great example of a player who has had to adjust in order to keep up with the times. Whereas TD or KG might still do well draining mid-rangers and simply holding down younger bucks in the post, Pierce has had to contend with a never-ending influx of speedy and shifty swingmen. He continues to run after shooters, and to move laterally against the Melos and LeBrons. And he still does them better than most guys.

Paul Pierce, at 35 years old, is still one of the most dangerous
swingmen in the world.

Pierce’s numbers: 20.4ppg, 5.5rpg, 3.6apg, and 1.6spg. Like TD and KG, Pierce will remain a strong contender for an All-Star spot this season, and maybe a couple more seasons after. Eventually, however, these three will have to call it quits and hang up their jerseys. When that happens, the younger set can look back at three guys who have managed to transcend the usual limits of NBA careers.

Duncan, Garnett, and Pierce. Three sure fire Hall-of-Famers. Three living legends. Three champions. Three oldies, but goodies.

The NBA Playoffs: Heat escape Rondo's Epic Performance

 #comeback #freebasketball
The Boston Celtics had a wonderful start and a flawless first half. They shot the ball well going over 60% and at one point made 9 straight shots. The Heat shot a measly 35% and D-Wade had just 2 points. The Celtics raced to a 15-point lead midway of the 2nd quarter and ended the half with a 7-point lead. The Celtics out-rebounded the Heat and Rajon Rondo was making jumpers to the tune of 22 points. The third quarter was a different story as the Heat and D-Wade came alive to outscore the Celtics 35-22 and grabbed the lead going to the 4th. The last period was tight with each team having their runs and changing leads. Miami had a 6-point lead then the Boston made a run to get a 5-point lead, then finally the Heat had a 3-point lead in the last minute until the Celtics tied it and then there was free basketball for 5 more minutes. This was a great game from start to finish and the Celtics almost came out with the win. They will need to win Game 3 on Friday in Boston or the series will be over.

#unclutch #BadDecisions
Dwyane Wade had a chance to put the Celtics away in regulation. He had 2 free-throws to give the Heat a 4-point lead and possibly ice the game but he missed one. The Celtics were down 3 and everyone knew that Ray Allen would take the tying trey. How that happened was due to a bad decision by Wade. He decided to gamble and go for a steal versus Garnett. Wade did not get the steal and left his defensive assignment open. The rest of the Heat adjusted to Wade's gamble and that left Allen for a wide open three which he made. That Wade gamble was unnecessary because Garnett was beyond the three-point line and he was not in a shooting position. He was not even thinking of a shot. So, the Heat still had a chance to win the game, two chances in fact. LeBron James rolled to the hoop but he missed a layup. The Heat got the offensive rebound and they had the last shot. LBJ had the ball against Rondo on an isolation and he settled for a long fadeaway jumper that was not close. James did not bother to drive or post up when he had about 60 lbs and 7 inches on Rondo. I dont know the thought process on that shot. All I know was James should and could have gotten a much better shot than that.

jumpers allover the court but his Celtics still lost in overtime.

#EpicGame #SuperMario
Rajon Rondo had his best playoff game in his career. He had fantasy numbers of 44 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 10 assists. He shot an amazing 16-24 (2-2 threes) from the field and 10-12 from the foul line. The better part about his game, Rondo was making shots from the outside and not just layups. The Heat gave him space to launch outside shots and he made them pay. At one point, Rondo made 5 straight jumpers. His epic game looked even better when you factor in that he played 53 minutes out of 53. The guy hardly looked fatigued at all. Rondo played magnificent but the Celtics still lost. Part of that was due to Mario Chalmers having a great game. Super Mario had 22 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists in 45 minutes and he kept the Heat close when Wade was not scoring. He also made 3-6 threes which helped open up the interior defense by the Celtics. Chalmers even picked up a technical foul for taunting Keyon Dooling. The point guards played a great game with Rondo submitting a performance for the ages while Chalmers scored more than his usual output.

#MissedCall #ConspiracyTheory
With the game tied 105-105 in overtime, Rajon Rondo drove to the hoop and went for a layup. He missed the shot and then the Heat went the other way for a Haslem dunk and the lead. Rondo did not go back on defense because he was complaining for the lack of foul call on Wade. Watching it live, I did not see or notice the foul by Wade on Rondo during his layup attempt. Instant replays shown by ESPN appeared to support Rondo's claim that he was fouled. It did not look obvious but he probably got fouled. Tough break for the Celtics and bad missed call there. More fuel to the conspiracy theory was that the Heat made 31-47 foul shots to the Celtics who had 26-29. LeBron had 18-24 attempts and three Celtics fouled out (Pietrus, Dooling, Pierce). The Celtics were called for 33 fouls while the Heat had 18. The officiating was not that good but it's arguable that the Heat got foul calls due to their aggressiveness and style of attacking the paint. The Celtics mainly took jumpers which dont result in a lot of free-throws. I doubt that a conspiracy is in play but it sucks that the Celtics did not get the foul call they want.

The NBA Playoffs: Boston T(ech) Party in Miami

The Miami Heat defense limited the Celtics to
79 points and 40% shooting to take Game 1.

#whitehotheat #dynamicduo
The Miami Heat have won their last 4 playoff games with defense and great games from Wade and James. The occasional boost from their supporting cast also made an appearance in Game 1. The dynamic duo had modest numbers as they combined for 54 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals and 5 blocks. LeBron James started strong as he outscored the Celtics in the first quarter 13-11 and then Dwyane Wade had an amazing fourth quarter with 10 points and a couple of nice passes and 2 blocks. The Heat never trailed in this game and they toyed with the Celtics interior defense with Wade and James making ridiculous fadeaway bank shots. Still, this was just one game and the only thing the 1-0 Heat lead guarantees is that the Celtics cannot sweep them.

#supportingcast #battier
Shane Battier has been inconsistent with his shooting but his defense and effort have been consistent all season. Battier started at power forward and he delivered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He still played excellent defense but the scoring surely helped too. There was a sequence where Battier blocked a layup by Pierce or Rondo then he raced downcourt for a transition three which he made. Mike Miller also had a splendid second quarter where he had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Joel Anthony had a couple of blocks and a nice dunk from a nasty left-handed pass from Wade. The supporting cast did their jobs and more while the Celtics only got a good game from Greg Stiemsma (6 pts, 4 rebs in 12 mins).

#blockparty #rebounds
The Heat dont have a dominating center who can block shots but they have a team full of athletes who can defend and block. The Heat blocked 11 shots (Boston had 1) and some of those blocks resulted into transition chances for the Heat. A sure basket for the Celtics suddenly gets blocked then the ball goes the other way and the Heat score. That's a 4-point swing there which was very crucial for the Celtics who have so much trouble scoring. The Heat also out-rebounded the Celtics 48-33 which was weird because Miami got 13 offensive rebounds (10 for Celtics) even though they shot 50%. The Celtics were limited to jumpers and they were not making most of them. Anytime they went inside, a plethora of Heat defenders were waiting to defend the rim.

#Tparty #cantbuyabucket
The Celtics could not buy a basket. They shot below 40% from the field and missed 10 fts. Only Kevin Garnett shot a decent 9-16 from the field and the rest of the team was at 30%. Ray Allen missed four free throws and Pierce got outplayed by James (12 points only). Rondo played good but with Allen and Pierce struggling, he needed numbers similar to LeBron and that was not happening. It did not help at all that the Celtics got whistled for 5 technical fouls. Not all were warranted especially the one called on coach Doc Rivers. The officiating was bad but not a direct reason for the loss. This was tough for the Celtics because the Heat had 5 more turnovers, 10 fast break points and missed 20 threes yet they still lost by 14. On a positive light, they managed to compete in the first half (46-46) and they had a 35-point 2nd quarter. Can they do that more often? They still have a chance to steal one game. Game 2 is on Wednesday.

The NBA Playoffs: 2012 Eastern Finals Preview

The NBA Playoffs: 2012 Eastern Finals Preview

(2) Miami Heat vs. (4) Boston Celtics
Season Series: Celtics 3-1

How the HEAT got here: The Miami Heat pounded the shorthanded New York Knicks in 5 games. The tandem of Carmelo and Amare were no match for the Big 3. The Heat were heavily favored in that series and they got more help when the Knicks got hit with more injuries to Shumpert and Davis. In the second round, the shorthanded Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers in 6 games, winning the last 3 in convincing fashion after being down 1-2. The Heat lost Chris Bosh to an injury and he is out indefinitely. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade played their best basketball together from Games 4-6 as they dominated the Pacers entire starting lineup, outscoring them 197-184.

Their Strengths: The best tandem in the NBA is Wade and James. They can take over offensively and defensively. We saw them dominate the Pacers with their array of jumpers and drives. They get everyone involved with their unselfish play and they run the fastbreak close to perfection. Their pick and roll game is unstoppable when D-Wade splits and slices coverages while LeBron barrels his way through defenders. For all their offensive capabilities, the Heat are a very good defensive team.  They were a top 5 defensive team during the regular season and they are second in points allowed (Celtics-1st) during the playoffs. They are able to collapse and rotate defensively because they have smart defenders like Haslem, Battier, Wade, James and Anthony. The Heat forced about 17 turnovers per game during the playoffs while they gave up the ball 13 times on average. We all know what the Heat can do with fast break chances.

Their Weaknesses:  Even with Bosh, the Heat still lacked a dependable low-post game. Bosh has settled into taking more mid-range jumpers than drives or post-ups. Without him, James and Wade have posted-up more often but that isnt their strength and it's arguable that posting-up takes away from their opportunity to create from the perimeter or from pick and rolls. The Heat lacks size upfront and their 3 losses in the playoffs have them being out-rebounded by their opponent. The Celtics have a great rebounder in Garnett and the Heat need to employ team-rebounding to secure the loose ball. Having their guards stay back to help rebound would limit transition chances for the Heat. Their bench is mostly inconsistent and without their contributions, the Heat would be always playing 2 vs 5 and that isnt a recipe for beating the Celtics.

X-Factor: Udonis Haslem will see more minutes in this series compared to the previous ones. He will be counted on to play great defense on Garnett plus Haslem needs to make his jumpers to open up the driving and passing lanes for James and Wade.

How the CELTICS got here: The Celtics are hobbled and old but they are tough and gritty. They beat the Atlanta Hawks in 6 games during the first round even when Rondo got suspended for one game. Pierce and Allen were both playing hurt and they did not have home court advantage but those did not matter. The Celtics were carried by Garnett and Rondo (best player) who are still both playing excellent after the second round. The Celtics outlasted the Sixers in 7 games playing excellent defense while displaying ugly basketball. Their offense still sputtered but their defense was topnotch.

Their Strengths: The Celtics have an amazing court general in Rajon Rondo who is a threat to get a triple-double every game. His brilliance in the half-court sets allows the old Big 3 to get the ball in spots where they can be effective. Rondo facilitates their offense to the tune of about 11 assists per game. Brandon Bass has become an efficient pick and pop guy which gives more breathing room for the rest of the Big 3. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce have decent post games which they incorporate into the flow of the offense. Defensively, the Celtics are the best of the four remaining teams. They know their roles and responsibilities so they are able to contest shots and force tough jumpers. Open shots against the Celtics are rare.

Their Weaknesses: The Celtics play ugly basketball because they miss a lot of shots and they rarely go out in transition. They have had a hard time scoring in the playoffs. They average 88 points a game which is about 7 points less than Miami who doesnt have the 17-18 points that Bosh averages. They win through their defense and toughness. Their defense is not a big advantage over the Heat because the Heat are just as stingy as the Celtics. Their bench is actually worse than the Heat since they score the least points of all the teams remaining. With Avery Bradley out for the season, Sasha Pavlovic and Marquis Daniels will probably get minutes because they lack wing defenders to cover James and Wade.

X-Factor: Brandon Bass will have tons of opportunities to pick and pop and to cut to the basket. If he averages at least 15 points in the series, the Celtics have a great chance to upset the Heat. Miami cannot send his defender to double team KG at the post or to trap Rondo because Bass can make the open jumpers.

Key Match-up: Rondo vs. James. Both guys are threats to get triple-doubles each night and both are the best players of their respective teams. Rajon Rondo is motivated to play the Heat again and so is LeBron. Rondo has the advantage against all the point guards of the Heat combined and he is a match-up nightmare for Coach Spo. Expect the Heat to put James on Rondo in clutch situations to limit his chances to dribble penetrate and create for his teammates.

What will probably happen: The wild West will have all the scoring and offense while the East will feature physical play and excellent defense. The games could be ugly but it will still be exciting. The Heat are rolling and clicking while the Celtics are sputtering and limping to the finish. Rondo will give the Heat so much trouble but if LeBron can contain him, the Celtics suddenly become so limited on offense especially since Allen has not been shooting well and Pierce is somewhat hobbled. Shane Battier and Mike Miller can guard Pierce while James will be on Rondo. D-Wade will have a significant advantage versus Allen and without Bradley's defense, Wade could erupt for at least 35 each game. The Celtics are not getting anything from their bench and any sign of early foul trouble will surely diminish any hopes of an upset for the Celtics. The Heat are starting to make their threes again and if that happens in regularity, the Celtics cannot leave their assignments to help on defense against James/Wade which would give the Heat great advantage when going one-on-one versus their primary defenders. The possibility that Bosh plays in the series is still murky but the Heat have enough weapons to dispose of the Celtics.

Prediction: Heat in 6.

The NBA Playoffs: Luck of the Irish (or Rondo)

quarter and he finished with a triple-double

#WinOrGoHome #brickfest
If you want defensive basketball, the Celtics and Sixers gave us 7 games of excellent defense and a thousand of missed shots and ugly basketball. The Sixers had a chance to pull off an upset but the Celtics showed their poise and clutch-shooting even after Paul Pierce fouled out with four minutes left. Rondo made some clutch (lucky) shots and Garnett played great again. Game 7 did not have a lot of points but it still delivered on the excitement level. The Celtics led most of the way but the Sixers were always in striking distance. Again both teams struggled shooting (Celtics 42%, Sixers 35%) but the Celtics shot their free throws (20-22) a lot better and Rondo even made his foul shots to clinch the victory.

#tripledouble #shooter?
Rajon Rondo took over the ball game when Pierce fouled out. He made one deep two (almost a three) and then a long three that was all net. He even made 4-4 free throws (60% ft) and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter including 9 straight as he outscored the Sixers 11-7 down the stretch. By the way, Rondo also got a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He is the 2nd player to get a triple-double in a Game 7 after Larry Bird. The Sixers let Rondo shoot from the perimeter and they fouled him intentionally because those are his weaknesses. On this night, Rondo came to the rescue and made sure that the Celtics will visit Miami on Monday night.

#BigTicket #Rayray
The extra rest day surely helped Kevin Garnett prepare and get ready for this game. He started strong getting 9 points and 7 rebounds in the 1st quarter. He made a buzzer-beater jumper at the end of the third to keep the Celtics ahead. He finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double. He was good defensively and KG was superb with his screens to get Ray Allen going in the fourth quarter. Allen still struggled with his shot but he made two threes in the 4th quarter to help the Celtics keep the lead.

#Sixers #turnovers
The Sixers played with great intensity and effort. Their defense was excellent but their offense needed a lot of fine tuning. They shot poorly again and they had many turnovers which disrupted their chance to cut the lead. The Sixers threw the ball away a couple of times with Iguodala forcing the issue by throwing alley-oop passes that did not connect. The Sixers were probably nervous and jittery playing a Game 7 on the road and their roster was fairly inexperienced in pressure situations. Lou Williams and Thad Young were unable to provide enough scoring from the bench (13 total points). Still, the Sixers had a great playoff run and many people did not expect the Sixers to even compete against the Celtics but they were there at the end but just could not get over the hump. Maybe next year.
