Ateneo and San Beda continued to
gain momentum even as the UP Fighting Maroons lost in their debut game and the
Arellano Chiefs registered win #1 on day 3 of the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason
Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. The loaded NU Bullpups and the Adamson Lady
Falcons also won their respective assignments in their own divisions earlier
today.

Roundup:
In the first game, John Cauilan
and RP-Youth mainstay Hubert Cani paired up for 33 points to lead last season’s
UAAP Juniors bridesmaids, the NU Bullpups, in a resounding win over the UPIS
Junior Maroons, 83-54. NU used a crippling 27-10 attack in the second period to
break the game open and put the result beyond doubt even before the halftime
break. Diego Dario led UPIS with 16 points, while lanky forward Raymart Sablan
hauled down 13 rebounds.

The second game was a marathon
match as the Adamson Lady Falcons beat the UP Lady Maroons in double overtime,
93-88. Jinkie Balasta led Adamson with 24 markers, while Janille De Castro and
Marirane Tongco scored 19 and 17 points respectively. Shifty guard Bea Daez led
the Lady Maroons with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.

In the third game, the Arellano
Chiefs registered their first win by beating the UPHSD Altas, 74-65. Newcomer
Gio Jalalon had a great debut with 12 points, 4 steals, and 3 assists, while
Levi Hernandez and James Forrester combined for 25 points. One revelation was
former JRU Light Bomber Keith Agovida, who resurfaced in the college scene with
11 points for Arellano U. The Altas struggled from the get-go and were led by
Juneri Baloria’s 23 markers.
James Forrester will be the undisputed leader of the Chiefs this season. |
The fourth game featured a much
stronger San Beda Red Lions squad devouring the youthful UP Fighting Maroons,
70-58. Rome Dela Rose ran rings around the Maroon defenders, scoring 18 points
on 6-of-7 FG shooting to lead the Bedans, while Ola Adeogun had 12 points and 7
boards. Young gun Francis Abarcar also did well for coach Boyet Fernandez, scoring
10 points in just 17 minutes. Balik-UP player Tata Marata led the Maroons with
13 points, but he shot only 4-of-12 from the floor.

The last match of the day saw
Ateneo get its third win at the expense of the EAC Generals, 80-67. A trio of
former Eaglets spearheaded the Blue & White – Kiefer Ravena, Von Pessumal,
and Juami Tiongson all scored at least 15 points for new coach Bo Perasol. On
the other end of the floor, Igee King and John Tayontong each tossed in 13
markers to lead EAC, while big man Gigi Manga Hiole was limited to just 10
points in 38 minutes of action. The smaller Ateneo frontline came up big as the
Eagles surprisingly outrebounded the Generals, 50-38.
Juami Tiongson was on-target against EAC. |
