The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: May 10, 2013 Roundup

UST leaned on Aljon Mariano’s late game heroics to pull out a close one over San Sebastian while De La Salle’s triumph over Lyceum was marred by a near-brawl in the endgame in yesterday’s action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

Jeron Teng and the Archers won their fourth straight
in the 2013 Filoil tourney.

Roundup:
In the day’s first game, the National University Bullpups had a surprisingly easy time disposing of the La Salle Green Hills Junior Blazers, 81-57. The Bullpups of coach Jeff Napa leaned on a dominant second half to distance themselves from the Greenies after a tight first half that ended, 39-32, in favor of NU. RP-Youth mainstay Hubert Cani led the way for NU with 16 points and 4 assists, while John Cauilan and Mark Dyke each registered double-doubles for the Bullpups. Cauilan had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Dyke scored 13 markers and collared 12 caroms. Carlo Adabeza and Rashleigh Prince Rivero combined for 34 points and 34 rebounds to lead LSGH’s losing cause. RP-Youth member Kobe Paras did not suit up for LSGH, which now holds a 1-3 win-loss record.

Lorenzo Battad of NU drives strong.

The second game saw the Letran Squires cruise to their third win in four games after defeating the UPIS Junior Maroons, 77-63. The frontline trio of Yves Sazon, Gerdy Alacre, and Ivan Villanueva proved to be too much to handle for the overmatched UPIS quintet. Letran’s terrific trio combined for 50 points and 27 rebounds, with Villanueva’s 14 points and 12 rebounds serving as the highlight. Raymart Sablan also had a double-double for UPIS with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Junior Maroons struggled with their field goal shooting all game long. Erstwhile leading scorer Diego Dario, in fact, shot a miserable 3-of-15 from the floor. UPIS absorbed its third straight defeat.

Yves Sazon of Letran splits the D.

In the third game, the Centro Escolar University Lady Scorpions had four players score in double-figures in their win over the Lyceum Lady Pirates, 61-54. Ybur Mendoza, Apet Pontejos, and Marjorie Mercado combined for 42 points while Shaddy Ogunsemuyen scored 10 points and grabbed TWENTY rebounds for CEU, which now totes a 2-win, 1-loss slate. The Lady Pirates were led by Mhean Vasquez, who finished with 16 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds.

Ybur Mendoza gets in close for two.

The fourth game featured a close encounter between the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers and the San Sebastian Stags. Coach Pido Jarencio’s Tigers had to lean on the fourth quarter heroics of Aljon Mariano, who drilled in a total of 23 points, to earn only their second win of the tournament. Mariano got ample support fro Karim Abdul’s 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Tata Bautista and Kevin Ferrer registered 12 and 10 markers respectively. The Tigers had a tough time containing the Baste trio of Jaymark Perez, Jovit Dela Cruz, and Leo De Vera. Perez led all scorers with 24 points on top of 5 rebounds and 4 steals, but he did commit 7 turnovers. Dela Cruz registered 20 points and 9 rebounds, while volume sniper De Vera finished with a dozen markers and 2 blocks. The Stags have now lost 4 of their 6 games.

Mark Tano tries to carve some space down low.

The fight-marred final match of the day resulted in the De La Salle Green Archers beating the Lyceum Pirates, 70-64. With the match winding down in the fourth quarter, Lyceum’s Jeremiah Taladua gave DLSU’s Gab Reyes a hard foul during a fast break sequence. This caused a near-melee that saw players from both sides storming the hardwood. Several sanctions were meted out – Taladua was tagged with an unsportsmanlike foul, DLSU’s Norbert Torres was also given an unsportsmanlike foul for hitting a Lyceum player, the DLSU bench was handed a technical foul, LPU’s John Azores, Shaq Alanes, and Wilson Baltazar were all thrown out, and DLSU’s Arnold Van Opstal, Robert Bolick, and Matt Salem were also all ejected.

Phew. Did you get all that?

La Salle’s cause was spearheaded by Jeron Teng’s 19 points, while the big man pairing of Torres and Jason Perkins contributed 19 points and 22 rebounds in total. Curiously enough, the Archers were awarded a whopping FIFTY-SIX free throw attempts. They connected on 37. On the other end, the Pirates shot 13-of-18 from the stripe. Dexter Zamora and Tirso Lesmoras led Lyceum with 18 and 15 markers respectively. LPU fell to 0-3 in the standings.

Norbert Torres hurries a shot.

Dexter Zamora gets free for an easy lay-up.
