The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: June 5, 2013 Roundup

Two of the most impressive teams in over the summer disposed of their respective foes and are headed on a collision course as the playoffs heated up in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup. Also, the Finals cast of the Women’s division was set after DLSU and FEU pulled off contrasting wins yesterday.

Ray Parks skies for two against Letran.

Roundup:
In Wednesday’s first game, the FEU Lady Tamaraws subdue the CEU Lady Scorpions, 68-64. CEU mounted a big third quarter rally to take the lead heading into the final period, but the Green & Gold gals held on to nail the final berth in the Women’s division championship game. Camille Sambile struck through with 21 points and 5 rebounds, while Marites Albano scored a dozen markers – hitting four triples – to lead FEU’s cause. On the other end, Apet Pontejos and Ybur Mendoza paired up for 44 points to lead CEU, which lost for just the second time in five starts.

The second game saw the DLSU Lady Archers beat the UST Tigresses, 71-66, to advance to the Women’s Finals. Trish Piatos and Cass Santos combined for 35 points to lead the La Sallians to their fifth win in as many games. UST was actually better at rebounding and shooting, but DLSU made up for these with better ball movement (21-10 in assists) and stingier defense (they forced 30 UST turnovers). Maica Cortes and Lore Rivera each tallied a double-double to lead the Tigresses. The title game between FEU and DLSU is on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.

In the third game, the National University Bulldogs had to buckle down in the payoff period to ward off the tougher-than-expected Letran Knights, 69-67. Ray Parks led NU with 16 points and 4 assists, while Gelo Alolino and Troy Rosario scored 13 and 12 markers respectively. The Bulldogs were +5 in rebounds, +3 in assists, and +6 in blocks, but they shot just 58% from the line. Letran’s Mark Cruz led the Muralla quintet with 16 points, while rookie sensation Rey Nambatac drilled in 11 markers. Big man Raymund Almazan also held his own with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.

Emmanuel Mbe collars the rebound.

The final match of the day resulted in the San Beda Red Lions advancing to the semifinals at the expense of the De La Salle Green Archers, 66-63. Arthur Dela Cruz was a tower of power for the Bedans, finishing with 14 points, 11 boards, and 3 dimes. Rome Dela Rosa and Ryusei Koga both did well, too. They backstopped Dela Cruz by netting 12 and 11 markers respectively. The Taft-based dribblers, meanwhile, were led by the combined 31 points of Almond Vosotros and Jeron Teng. Despite their size advantage, the Archers were outrebounded, 42-33. They also shot just 40% from the field and 63% from the line while allowing the Lions to connect on 47% of their field goal attempts. NU and SBC meet each other tomorrow to dispute one of the two Finals spots.
