Action in the
2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup this past Monday with big wins
coming from Lyceum and CEU, and the RP-Youth team finally making its debut!

In the day’s opener,
the Mapua/Malayan Junior Cardinals bounced back from an opening day loss and
turned back the UPIS Junior Maroons, 85-54. David Velvez erupted for 20 points
on 8/11 FG shooting on top of 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals to lead MIT. The
trio of Jasper Salengga, Dainiel Aguirre, and Lorence Victoria effectively
backed him up with a combined 35 markers and 25 boards. Allane Barles led the
way for UPIS with 19 points in 22 minutes. The Junior Maroons, however, fell to
1-2 in the team standings.

The second
game saw the Letran Squires storm back in the second half to scrape by the JRU
Light Bombers, 59-58. Letran had a slow start and trailed at the half before
rallying in the third quarter to tie the game and eventually outlast the
Bombers in the endgame. Jerk Balanza was terrific for the Squires, scoring 17
points on 7/12 FG shooting while also grabbing 6 rebounds, handing out 3
assists, and getting 1 steal. Kylle Dungan backed him up with 10 markers and 4
boards. On the other end, JRU was paced by the dynamic duo of Darius Estrealla
and Andrei Dada. Estrella racked up a sublime double-double with 17 points and
14 rebounds, while Dada scored 15 markers on the strength of 4 treys.

In the third
game, the Lyceum Pirates thoroughly dominated the Mapua Cardinals, 92-83. Dexter
Zamora and Rhoel Maconocido combined for 38 points as Lyceum won its first game
of the summer. That pair hit 5 triples in all, underscoring their potent offensive
arsenal. As for MIT, Josan Nimes stood out with 24 markers, but he missed 9 of
his 15 FG attempts. He also tallied 7 rebounds and 1 assist, while Jessie
Saitanan and Joseph Eriobu combined for 28 points. Mapua falls to its second
defeat in the tourney.

The
penultimate game proceeded with the CEU Scorpions outscoring the EAC Generals,
49-33, in the middle two periods to pull out their first win of the summer, 76-67.
Alfred Batino, Rodrigue Ebondo, Joseph Sedurifa, and Mon Abundo provided the
scoring punch for CEU with a combined 48 points. Ebondo also impressed in other
departments, pulling down 11 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, blocking 2 shots,
and getting 1 steal. EAC, meanwhile, was led by the combined scoring of Noube
Happi, Igee King, and Sydney Tayontong, who scored 19, 11, and 10 points
respectively.

The final
match of the day resulted in the FEU Tamaraws scrambling to avoid an upset at
the hands of the RP U18 team, 74-73. FEU pounced on a late turnover by the U18
boys to preserve the tight victory and move up to 2-0. Raymar Jose had 12
points in 17 minutes while Mike Tolomia scored 11 markers in 16 minutes to lead
the Morayta quintet. Jose also added 10 boards to his name. Coach Jamike Jarin’s
young squad, meanwhile, was led by a duo of former San Beda Red Cubs – Andrei Caracut
and Radge Tongco. Caracut and Tongco paired up for 30 points to lead the
nationals, who are using this tournament to prepare themselves for the 2014
SEABA U18 tournament in Malaysia and the 2014 FIBA Asia U18 Championships in
Doha, Qatar. UP Fighting Maroon Henry Asilum also impressed with 10 markers,
while the starting frontline of Leonard Santillan and Mark Dyke turned some
heads, pairing up for 12 points and 10 boards.
