Action in the 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup this past Monday with big wins coming from Lyceum and CEU, and the RP-Youth team finally making its debut!

The 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup continues to heat up!

Roundup:
In the day’s opener, the Mapua/Malayan Junior Cardinals bounced back from an opening day loss and turned back the UPIS Junior Maroons, 85-54. David Velvez erupted for 20 points on 8/11 FG shooting on top of 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals to lead MIT. The trio of Jasper Salengga, Dainiel Aguirre, and Lorence Victoria effectively backed him up with a combined 35 markers and 25 boards. Allane Barles led the way for UPIS with 19 points in 22 minutes. The Junior Maroons, however, fell to 1-2 in the team standings.

David Velvez goes up for the easy deuce.

The second game saw the Letran Squires storm back in the second half to scrape by the JRU Light Bombers, 59-58. Letran had a slow start and trailed at the half before rallying in the third quarter to tie the game and eventually outlast the Bombers in the endgame. Jerk Balanza was terrific for the Squires, scoring 17 points on 7/12 FG shooting while also grabbing 6 rebounds, handing out 3 assists, and getting 1 steal. Kylle Dungan backed him up with 10 markers and 4 boards. On the other end, JRU was paced by the dynamic duo of Darius Estrealla and Andrei Dada. Estrella racked up a sublime double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Dada scored 15 markers on the strength of 4 treys.

The 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: April 26, 2014 Roundup

Action in the 2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup heated up yesterday as the men’s teams took to the hardwood. At the end of the day, FEU, San Sebastian, San Beda, and De La Salle all came away with debut wins.

(Left) Arthur Dela Cruz saves the ball, (Middle-Top) Terence Mustre debuts for DLSU,

Roundup:
In the day’s opener, the San Sebastian Golden Stags leaned on their frontline to fashion out an 81-78 win over the UP Fighting Maroons. Rhanzel Yong led the Stags here, shooting 7/13 from the floor to finish with 16 points in just 18 minutes of action. He was backstopped by Jaymark Perez, who recorded an all-around stat-line – 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Fil-Aussie Bradwyn Guinto also impressed, recording 11 markers, 4 boards, and 2 blocked shots. It was a tight game all throughout, but the Stags held sway mainly because they clobbered the Maroons on the glass, 59-39, and had 22 second-chance points to just 2 for UP. Former San Beda Red Lion Dave Moralde led UP with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists, while the backcourt trio of Henry Asilum, Kyles Lao, and the returning Mikee Reyes combined for 42 markers.

Filoil Flying V Premiere Cup Scores: June 10, 2011

Speeding Bullets:
- The Energen Pilipinas U16 squad seems to be peaking at the right time. This team has a good mix of height and speed, and they showed it against a very game Letran five.
- The Red Cubs asserted their dominance over the Red Robins anew, and proved again why they're perennial title contenders in the NCAA Juniors division.
- The Soaring Falcons gave the Red Lions a scare, but San Beda's superior depth carried them through. Lions are still the favorites in the NCAA while Adamson is definitely a Top 4 team in the UAAP.
- Greg Slaughter was a force underneath. Perhaps all he needs is to get the rock in his sweet spots. He's not much of a back-down big, but when he gets it inside 10 feet, then he should make it. Has a sweet J too. Not pretty, but it goes in. Reminds me of a more raw Rabeh Al-Hussaini, plus about 5 or 6 inches.

Juniors:
RP U16 over CSJL Squires, 77-73

RP U16 77 -- Lao 15, Alejandro 15, Tongco 10, Tolentino 9, Vito 7, Dipultado 7, Javelosa 6, Asilum 6, Ramos 1, Pascual 1, Rivero 0, Subido 0
CSJL 73 -- Villanueva 26, Luib 18, Nambatac 11, Serafica 10, Catipay 3, Galleon 3, Quinto 2, Licyayo 0
Quarter scoring: 20-17, 37-42, 53-54, 77-73

Filoil Flying V Premiere Cup Scores: June 6, 2011

Speeding Bullets:
- The NU Bullpups are poised to make a serious Final 4 run this season. The rest of the UAAP Juniors field should watch out!
- Ateneo recovers from their loss to the Archers by dumping the Cards. If memory serves me well, this is the first time the Eagles have actually barged into the semis of this annual summer tourney.
- San Beda is just too good. And UP is, well UP. Anything more? Yep, thought so.
- FEU takes down DLSU and proves they're still potent. They've gone relatively under the radar, but they'll contend for a twice-to-beat edge, just like they do every year.
- Adamson caught a big fish by stopping the Stags. The Falcons have historically shown their best in the preseason only to falter in the UAAP, but this squad has still served notice that they'll be a force to reckon with.

Juniors:
RP U16 over NU Bullpups, 77-72

RP U16 77 -- Tolentino 29, Lao 16, Asilum 9, Dipultado 8, Subido 6, Vito 3, Tongco 2, Cani 2, Babilonia 2, Ramos 0, Murphy 0, Javelosa 0
NU 72 -- Rivero 23, Tendenilla 10, Napa 8, Baliton 8, Battad 7, Sunrabas 6, Tonsinco 6, Villagracia 2, Busa 2, Lopena 0, Lutia 0
Quarter scoring: 17-25, 43-36, 60-51, 77-72

Filoil FLying V Premiere Cup Scores: June 1, 2011

Speeding Bullets:
- Pretty surprising the way FEU manhandled the Eaglets today, since Ateneo beat them about a week ago in the Freego league. But then again Ateneo missed the services of Kris Porter and Jed Austria, both of whom are nursing injuries.
- Even more surprising was how the RP U16 squad railroaded the Zobel Junior Archers. Does this mean the Archers aren't as invincible as perceived?
- The Stags played sans Cal Abueva and Ian Sanggalang, two of their strongest scorers. Nonetheless, San Beda still notched an impressive quality win.
- DLSU's tour de force at the expense of the Pirates was impressive. Nice momentum building up for the clash with the Blue Eagles on Saturday.
- UP blew a chance at the #3 spot in their group by stumbling in the 4th quarter. Mike Silungan missed some key shots and now they'll probably face the top seed from the other group in the crossover. Lots of talent, but not a lot of composure. Tsk tsk.

Juniors:
FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws over AHS Blue Eaglets, 68-52
