Unbeknownst to many local hoop nuts, the 2014 William Jones Cup is currently ongoing in Taiwan. This is quite understandable, of course, given how no Philippine team is competing, but I have a vested interest here because, well, I love Asian basketball. Right now, many of the teams currently playing in Taiwan feature some of the most promising young Asian hoopsters, and that’s more than enough to get my attention.
Now let’s look at the results from day six!

EGYPT over JAPAN, 69-55

Egypt’s victory was a perfect example of the talent and depth on the roster, but this matchup was once again all about Japan’s inability to find a victory thus far in the tournament. With six losses already, Japan’s hopes of making a run at a title are out the window. The key for Egypt was the scoring pace set by several different players. Amir Abdelhalim (16 points), Ibrahim El Gamal (10 points), and Mohamed Alian (nine points) all contributed to the victory. Japan’s Makoto Hiejima deserves credit for racking up 20 points of his own, but the effort came in the loss.

USA over TAIWAN WHITE, 86-56

After a tough loss on Day 5, Team USA bounced back with a decisive victory over Taiwan B. The top star on Thursday for the Americans was Craig Williams, who delivered 22 points and 18 rebounds. Cory Bradford added 18 points and James Justice scored 15 points. Team USA took the early lead in this game and never relinquished it. Taiwan White’s Chen Hsiao-Jung scored 12 points and Kevin Hu tallied 10 points in the loss. The two teams have momentum building in opposite directions.

TAIWAN BLUE over IRAN, 84-76

The best matchup of the day on paper was the battle between Taiwan A and Iran. Iran took the early lead, but once Taiwan Blue took it back, the hosts never gave it back.
The victory for Chinese Taipei A was highlighted by the play of Lu Cheng-Ju (25 points) and Quincy Davis (13 points and 10 rebounds), but Iran’s Mohammad Ojaghi (17 points) and Meysam Mirzaei (14 points) came to play as well.

KOREA over JORDAN, 59-52

The star of the tournament thus far has been South Korea’s Ricardo Ratliffe, and he led his team to a 59-52 victory over Jordan. This was South Korea’s third win in a row. Ratliffe scored 24 points and added 14 rebounds in the victory, while teammate Moon Tae-Jong tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds. Despite controlling the tempo of the game and leading for the majority of the matchup, Jordan lost despite the admirable effort of Ahmad Al-Dwairi. The versatile Jordan center scored 18 points and added 15 rebounds.
