Unbeknownst to many local hoop nuts, the 2014 William Jones Cup is currently ongoing in Taiwan. This is quite understandable, of course, given how no Philippine team is competing, but I have a vested interest here because, well, I love Asian basketball. Right now, many of the teams currently playing in Taiwan feature some of the most promising young Asian hoopsters, and that’s more than enough to get my attention.

Taiwan White earned its second victory of the tournament, while Team Hayabusa continued its unperturbed freefall. Japan is now 0-5. While Takatoshi Furukawa managed to score 19 points and Tenketsu Harimoto added 16, Japan was still unable to pick up the win. After a hard-fought first half, Taiwan dominated in the third quarter and for the remainder of the game. The team was led by the scoring of Chang Jung-Hsuan (17 points), Chen Ying-Chun (14 points) and Chou Yi-Hsiang (11 points).

EGYPT over USA, 102-76

Team USA was stunned by World-Cup-bound Egypt in this one. The Afrobasket bridesmaids were dominant on the offensive end. Ibrahim El Gammal led the scoring with 26 points, while Ramy Abdalla also added 24 points. For Team USA, James Justice had 22 points and Corey Bradford scored 10. Egypt moved up to 3-2 in the standings — the same record as the Americans’.
KOREA over IRAN, 74-67

Ulsan Mobis Phoebus handed Iran a tough loss that featured intense action on both ends of the court. One of the bets players of the tournament thus far has been South Korea’s Ricardo Ratliffe, and he was the star of the game again. He scored 27 points and added 19 rebounds. Moon Tae-Young and Jeon Jun-Beom backed him up with 18 and 10 points respectively. Iran did not go down without a fight, though. Mohammad Ojaghi led the team in scoring with 27 points, but it was Meysam Mirzaei’s 15 points and 11 rebounds that kept Team Melli in the game.
TAIWAN BLUE over JORDAN, 78-72

This was a veritable battle for the top spot, and the home team beat Jordan, solidifying their hold on first place. It was an all-around effort for Taiwan Blue, as Jet Chang managed to score 16 points, Tsai Wen-Cheng added 12, and Yang Chin-Min tallied 10. Jordan slipped down to 3-2, but Al Nashama still is still one of the serious contenders. Even in defeat, Wesam Al-Sous (12 points), Mousa Al-Awadi (10 points), and Ahmad Al-Hamarsheh (10 points) did pretty well.
