Unbeknownst to many local hoop nuts, the 2014 William Jones Cup is currently ongoing in Taiwan. This is quite understandable, of course, given how no Philippine team is competing, but I have a vested interest here because, well, I love Asian basketball. Right now, many of the teams currently playing in Taiwan feature some of the most promising young Asian hoopsters, and that’s more than enough to get my attention.

IRAN over EGYPT, 65-62

Iran got back to its winning ways at the expense of Egypt thanks to give guys scoring in double-figures. Hamed Hosseinzadeh, Mohammad Hassanzadeh, Meysam Mirzaei, Emad Salmani, and Mohammad Torabi each scored 10 points for Team Melli, which used a huge third period run to open up a close game. They then held off Egypt’s rally in the final frame. Hassanzdeh also grabbed 18 big rebounds. On the other end, Haytham Khalifa and Mouhanad El Sabagh paired up for 25 markers for Egypt.

JORDAN over JAPAN, 81-63

Ahmed Al-Hamarsheh and Mousa Al-Awadi seem to have come into their own, taking over the scoring cudgels to lead Jordan over Japan. Al Nashama outscored Team Hayabusa, 25-7, in the third period to break a tight game open and coast to the win. Al-Hamarsheh and Al-Awadi combined for 6 triples and 39 points as Jordan remained unbeaten in three games. Wingmen Hironori Watanabe and Makoto Hiejima scored 16 and 19 points respectively for Japan, but Team Hayabusa still dropped its third game in a row.

USA over KOREA, 93-77

Korea stuck with the Americans for the entire first half before Team USA opened things up in the second half. Jermaine Dailey tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Americans while Craig Williams led the way with 19 markers. Korea was outrebounded here, 41-28, as Team USA asserted its might in the paint. The Koreans were paced by 19 points from Jeon Jun-Beom while Moon Tae-Young had 18 points and 10 rebounds.
TAIWAN BLUE over TAIWAN WHITE, 84-80

Taiwan Blue had an unexpectedly tough time disposing of its younger counterparts. Taiwan White actually led through three quarters before the Blues unloaded a huge finishing kick to pull the rug from them. Jet Chang led Taiwan Blue again with 23 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, while Lu Cheng-Ju hit 4 treys on his way to 17 markers. Five Taiwan White players scored in double-digits, led by the 15 points of Chang Jung-Hsuan. Kevin Hu and Chen Tes-Yu, meanwhile, scored 14 markers apiece.
