GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over BARAKO BULL ENERGY, 99-81

The GlobalPort Batang Pier used a strong team effort to counter a huge performance from Barako Bull import Solomon Alabi and grab a crucial PBA Commissioner’s Cup victory, 99-81, on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Alabi had a monster 37-point, 27-rebound performance for the Energy, but it was not enough against a Batang Pier side that just had more weapons.
Terrence Romeo scored 24 points, while import Calvin Warner had 23 points and 19 rebounds for GlobalPort, which improved to 3-3.
Stanley Pringle and Mark Isip each finished with 14 points while missing only two field goals between them, going a combined 13-for-15 (86.7%).
Barako Bull, which started the conference with three straight wins, lost for a second consecutive game.
Carlo Lastimosa and Chico Lanete dropped 12 and 11 points respectively to backstop Alabi’s efforts for the Energy.

KIA CARNIVAL over PUREFOODS STAR HOTSHOTS, 95-84

The PBA Commissioner’s Cup giant-killers Kia Carnival claimed another victim as they grabbed a stunning 95-84 victory over the Purefoods Star Hotshots on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
7-foot-3 import PJ Ramos scored 32 points but got plenty of support, especially from pint-sized point guard LA Revilla, who had 18 points and 7 assists in the victory.
Eloy Poligrates added 15 points, while Kia player-coach finally scored a first point in his PBA career after hitting a free throw in the second quarter.
Kia, which picked up a second win after earlier upsetting Philippine Cup champs San Miguel, did it by taking control of a surprising fourth quarter that they won, 27-9.
Kia looked like it would be in a bad position after Purefoods import Daniel Orton fished the fifth personal foul of Ramos with 10:07 still left to play in the fourth period. Orton extended the lead with a split from the free throw line to make it a 76-68 advantage.
But the Kia braintrust decided to leave Ramos on the floor and he quickly barreled his way into the post for two points. Kyle Pascual added a jumper and JR Cawaling drained a three-pointer from the left corner to bring the Carnival within one, 76-75.
The Carnival took full advantage of their size advantage outscoring Purefoods, 52-26, in the paint, while also turning the Hotshots’ 18 turnovers into 16 points.
Mark Barroca paced the losing side with 18 markers, while Joe Devance and Mick Pennisi each tallied 12 points in support. Import Daniel Orton struggled mightily here with only 6 points in under 20 minutes of play, prompting Purefoods fans to clamor for the return of former Best Import Marqus Blakely.
