#PBA2016 Commish Cup Roundup: February 24, 2016

Alaska and Star get their first wins of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the expense of Tropang TNT and Blackwater.

ALASKA ACES over TROPANG TNT, 108-100
Box Scores. 

The Alaska Aces got back on the winning track on Wednesday after coming from behind against Tropang TNT, 108-100, and notch its first victory in the 2016 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Debuting import Shane Edwards came up big, posting 36 points and 20 rebounds in his first PBA game. He shot only 10-for-23 (43%) from the field but earned himself 19 attempts from the free throw line to make up for it.





He got plenty of support from his local teammates with Vic Manuel and RJ Jazul each chipping in with 13 points. Manuel made six of his nine shots while Jazul did most of his damage from beyond the arc, knocking down three three-pointers. Calvin Abueva, meanwhile, added 11 points and six rebounds in a starting role.

Tropang TNT led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but Jazul helped lead Alaska back with some big three-pointers.

David Simon had 35 points, 19 rebounds, and 4 blocks for TNT, though he did turn the ball over eight times. Matt Ganuelas-Rosser added 14 points from off the bench.

Alaska, which is coming off an upset loss to Blackwater in its conference opener, is now 1-1 for the conference while TNT dropped to 1-3.

STAR HOTSHOTS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 122-103
Box Scores. 

The Star Hotshots leaned on the early explosion of James Yap to finally barge into the winning column after cruising past the Blackwater Elite, 122-103, in OPPO PBA Commissioner’s Cup action Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Yap scored 13 of his 15 points in the opening quarter where Star pulled away right away.

Import Denzel Bowles scored 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Allein Maliksi finished with 23 points to lead the Hotshots (1-3) who got their first victory of the tournament.





Behind the sizzling hands of Yap, who was named a starter for the first time in the tournament, the Hotshots zoomed to a 15-4 lead. Big Game James made six of his eight field goals, including three-of four triples in that quarter alone.

After Yap’s performance, it was Maliksi who finished the job as the Hotshots erected a lead as big as 28 points.

Blackwater was led by import MJ Rhett, who had 30 points and 21 boards, and Carlo Lastimosa, who had 20 markers, as the Elite (2-2) saw the end of their two-game win streak.
