The 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup: May 22, 2013 Roundup

Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College upset their more fancied foes while the UE Red Warriors avoided what could have been a humiliating loss in yesterday’s action from the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.

Roundup:
In the day’s opener, the Mapua/Malayan Red Robins earned their third win of the tournament at the expense of the UPHSD Junior Altas, 85-74. Noah Lugo led the Robins with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Ronnel Villaseñor, Dainiel Aguirre, and David Velvez each scored a dozen markers as Mapua remained within striking distance of the Juniors division’s top teams. Mark Miranda and Shaq Imperial each netted 16 points as Perpetual dropped its fifth straight game.

The second game saw the San Sebastian Staglets run roughshod over the erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo de Manila Blue Eaglets, 79-59. The Eaglets missed the services of star player Thirdy Ravena, who is still abroad. Baste didn’t waste any time exploiting this opportunity, leading by double-digits in the second period and never relinquishing it. Michael Calisaan and Rhanzel Yong lorded the interior for the Staglets, combining for 36 points and 27 rebounds. On the other end, undersized PF Mike Nieto led Ateneo with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Marc Salandanan added 11 points, though he shot just 3-of-13 from the field (all from beyond the arc). Baste moved up to 4-1, while the Ateneans dropped to 3-1.

Rhanzel Yong bullied the Ateneo bigs.

In the third game, the Arellano University Chiefs rebounded from a slump by handing the stacked San Beda Red Lions only their second defeat of the tourney, 67-66. Nard Pinto came up big in the clutch for AU, finding his teammates and making his own big shots as the Chiefs nabbed their fifth win in seven outings. Pinto ended up with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists to lead coach Koy Banal’s wards. He was backstopped by James Forrester’s 13 markers on the strength of three triples, while Julius Cadavis anchored the interior with 8 boards and 2 rejections. Rome Dela Rosa and Baser Amer spearheaded San Beda’s losing cause with 14 and 13 markers respectively. AU and SBC were pretty close in terms of rebounding and assists, but the Lions turned the ball over 19 times against just 15 for the Chiefs.

The fourth game featured the UE Red Warriors rescue themselves from a near-upset, outgunning the Lyceum Pirates in the second half en route to win #5, 82-72. Not surprisingly, the duo of Roi Sumang and Charles Mammie led coach Boysie Zamar’s Warriors. Sumang scored 19 points, dished out 6 assists, and grabbed 5 rebounds, while Mammie had 14 markers and 15 boards. Mark Francisco led the Pirates with 14 points on 7-of-9 FG shooting while also grabbing 6 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. This was Lyceum’s fifth loss in as many games. An interesting sequence in this game occurred between UE’s Lord Casajeros and Lyceum’s Dexter Zamora. In a move reminiscent of what FEU’s Arvie Bringas did in Season 75, Casajeros hurled a ball of spit at Zamora near the end of the fourth quarter. Zamora retaliated not by spitting back, but by leaving some drool on his palm and using it to shake Casajeros’s hand after the match. #SportsmanshipRules

The final match of the day resulted in the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals pulling the rug from under the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 73-68. Noube Happi’s monster production – 19 points and 17 rebounds, paced EAC as the Generals notched their first win in 6 tries, while John Monteclaro added a dozen markers and 7 rebounds. On the other end, Jon Rebollos hit 5 treys to finish with 15 points, while Raffy Gusi scored 13 points. San Sebastian wonder boy Jaymark Perez struggled here, shooting just 3-of-9 from the floor while also turning the ball over 6 times. Fellow newcomer Leo De Vera also found the going tough, making just 2 of his 9 field goals and coughing the ball up 4 times. Baste fell to 2 wins against 5 losses.
