RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS over NLEX ROAD WARRIORS, 96-91

Rain or Shine star Paul Lee started the game on fire and finished the game off with some clutch baskets as he lifted his Elasto Painters to a 96-91 win over debuting NLEX in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Lee scored a team-high 25 points on 8-for-11 shooting, including Rain or Shine’s last six points as he helped his team hold off the Road Warriors in the endgame. Import Rick Jackson added 17 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in the victory, the team’s first in the conference.
NLEX won the rebounding battle here, 55-46, but they shot just 37% from the field. Former NBAer Al Thornton paced the Road Warriors with 28 points and 12 boards, while Rudy Lingganay added 19 markers off the bench.

PUREFOODS STAR HOTSHOTS over ALASKA ACES, 108-88

The Purefoods Star Hotshots were in sharp form as they crushed Philippine Cup runners-up Alaska, 108-88, to notch a second Commissioner’s Cup win on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
With the win, the Hotshots joined early leaders Barako Bull, Talk ‘N Text and Meralco atop the standings.
Purefoods didn’t lack for heroes in this one, with James Yap, Marqus Blakely, and Alex Mallari all tying for team-high honors with 17 points.
Mallari, in particular shot an efficient 5-for-8 clip from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line while Blakely grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists in a well-rounded effort for the Hotshots.
Marc Pingris also chipped in with 12 points and 8 boards, while Allein Maliksi had 11 points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting, including 3 three-pointers.
Alaska, playing in its first game since losing a heart-breaking Game Seven against San Miguel in the Philippine Cup finals, showed plenty of rust in the contest, especially missing two important pieces of their roster in center Sonny Thoss and JVee Casio, who both sat out the game. Alaska import DJ Covington finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds, while Chris Banchero had 16 markers.

KIA CARNIVAL over SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN, 88-78

The Kia Carnival, behind their hulking import PJ Ramos and some steady play from its local crew, pounced on a rusty San Miguel Beermen squad making its conference debut as it scored a major upset, 88-78, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The 7-foot-3 Ramos had 22 points and 8 rebounds to lead Kia, which won for the first time since its franchise debut against fellow expansion club Blackwater last October.
He was limited by foul trouble for almost the entire second half, though, but drew plenty of help from his local teammates in this one.
LA Revilla played big with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Mark Yee scored 11 points and crashed the boards with 9 boards, while JR Cawaling scored 10, including a key basket in the final minute that all but sealed the game for the Carnival.
Kia led by as many as 18 big points, 65-47, over the Philippine Cup champions. Though their lead was threatened in the fourth period, the Carnival showed great poise playing without their import and holding off the Beermen in the end.
June Mar Fajardo and Ronald Roberts each dropped 18 points to lead SMB, while Arwind Santos scored 14. Roberts also collared 22 rebounds in his PBA debut.

MERALCO BOLTS over TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS, 91-83

The Meralco Bolts remained unbeaten in three PBA Commissioner’s Cup games after disposing of sister team Talk ‘N Text, 91-83, to move into the solo lead on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Import Josh David failed to reach double-figures in the game, but the Bolts didn’t lack firepower as their locals carried the load on offense.
Gary David scored 17 points on an efficient 5-for-8 shooting clip to lead the way. John Wilson hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points, while Cliff Hodge and Mike Cortez each added 11 markers in the game.
Davis shot a mere 1-for-9 for just eight points, but he grabbed 17 big rebounds and played some tough defense to help the team move up to 3-0 for the conference. Talk ‘N Text lost for the first time in PBA Commissioner’s Cup, dropping to 2-1.
Talk ‘N Text remained well within striking distance, trailing by just one point with about five minutes remaining after a three-pointer from veteran Willie Miller. But Meralco finished the game strong, scoring nine of the last 11 points to seal the win.
Richard Howell led Talk ‘N Text with 24 points and 9 rebounds, while Castro had 18.
