WEEK 4 POWER RANKINGS:
Let the disagreements begin!
1- UST Growling Tigers: I’m still picking UST as the top team for one simple reason – after going four games against, arguably, four of the top seven deepest college teams in the country (the other three are Beda, Baste, and UST itself) the Tigers are at 3-1, and, in fact, they could’ve just as easily been 4-0. The truth is, UST has performed way beyond expectations despite probably the toughest opening three-week schedule of any team out there. Now with UE, Adamson, and UP as their next opponents, Coach Pido Jarencio’s wards are in good shape to end the first round at the top of the standings.
2- Ateneo Blue Eagles: The Eagles are tied for first after two wins in Week 4, but those wins weren’t the demolition jobs most of their fans probably expected. In both games against UP and UE, Ateneo had to regroup in the second half to secure the twin victories. There are two possible perspectives to take here. The first one is to see Ateneo as far from the powerful team their roster might make them out to be. They are vulnerable. The second one is to see Ateneo as a strong second half team – a team that cranks it up at just the right time. Right now, I’m leaning more towards the former. It’ll take a big win over FEU in week 5 for me to swing the other way.
3- NU Bulldogs: What a difference a week makes! A few days after being criticized for floundering against high quality opposition, the Bulldogs beat the Tamaraws and then stuffed the Falcons. Ray Parks didn’t score as much as he usually does, but he showed how good a facilitator he could be. The scary thing with Coach Eric Altamirano’s crew is when the guys NOT named Parks or Mbe click, they’re almost unstoppable. Against DLSU in week 5, those guys will have to click if the Bulldogs want a shot at second spot.
4- FEU Tamaraws: They’re tied for first in the standings, but that doesn’t necessarily make the Tamaraws the best team in the land. If their performance in Week 4 proved anything, it’s this – FEU will only go as far as Terrence Romeo will take them. RR Garcia has been missing, and Mike Tolomia has been inconsistent. They’re not looking to establish Anthony Hargrove as hard as they should, and Arvie Bringas is a walking, ticking, time bomb. As long as Romeo does his best Ray Parks stat-stuffing impersonation, then FEU should do well, but can he do this for 8 more elimination round games? I have an ominous feeling the law of averages will catch up with him soon enough, and FEU will be worse for wear when that happens. I’m sure Coach Bert Flores is hoping Romeo can keep waxing hot against the Eagles on Sunday.
5- DLSU Green Archers: In Filipino parlance, ginto na naging bato pa. As far as I can see, there are two things holding back the Green Archers. The most obvious one is free throw shooting. They’re not exactly the worst in the league, but because they have the third-most charity attempts, each missed free throw is magnified. It also hurts that those misses usually come in crunch time. The second thing is what I believe to be Coach Gee Abanilla’s over-reliance on Jeron Teng. Teng is an awesome talent, no doubt about that, but his inexperience has really cost La Salle dearly. Coach Gee is probably building Teng up for the future, but he seems to be doing so at the expense of the present. If Teng continues to cough up the ball and miss from the line, then the Falcons and Bulldogs will be all too happy to pounce and chomp on DLSU this week.
6- UP Fighting Maroons: The Maroons are at 0-5, which is the worst record so far, but their performances have shown that they are not the worst team out there. They scared the bejeezus out of Ateneo last Thursday, and deserved to win against FEU this past Sunday. If they stay true to form, which just means if Chris Ball and Mark Lopez continue to play well and if Mike Silungan and Raul Soyud can improve their shot-selection, then UP should enjoy a win over UE on Sunday.
7- UE Red Warriors: The Reds frustrated Ateneo for one whole half before their well dried up in the last twenty minutes. UE can actually put forth a solid starting unit led by Roi Sumang, Chris Javier, and Adrian Santos, but they’ll need inspired play from the supporting cast to threaten for an entire game. I seriously doubt their chances against the Tigers on Wednesday, but, if they play their cards right, an upset against UP this coming weekend might not be too farfetched.
8- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Even with a healthy Alex Nuyles, the Falcons wouldn’t be in the top half of these rankings, but now that he’s out possibly for a significant amount of time, things are bound to get really bad for the San Marcelino five. Jericho Cruz’s production continues to be up-and-down, while opposing defenses have figured out how to defend Eric Camson. The only constant so far has been Rodney Brondial, but his propensity to get into foul trouble doesn’t exactly make him a prime candidate for a leader. The struggles will continue to get even tougher as La Salle and UST await them in Week 5.

*Even when he defers to his teammates, Parks still looks like the best player on the floor.

Terrence Romeo (FEU) – 21.0ppg, 8.5rpg, 5.5apg, 2.5spg, 9 threes total (24.0 EFF)
*He struggled against NU, but almost single-handedly towed FEU past UP.

*Welcome back to relevance, Clark Bautista.
Shock Factor: (most surprising performance -- in a good way)

*Ball was the big reason UP gave Ateneo a scare, and he more than held his own against FEU’s rough-and-tumble frontline.
