Speeding Bullets:
- The newest Alas on the block seems legit as Kenneth Alas led the Squires to their second win with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. He looks to more in the mold of guard Kevin rather than big man Jun-Jun.
- Both the Tiger Cubs and Baby Falcons aren’t particularly tagged as title favorites in Season 75 of the UAAP Juniors tourney, but they can still pose some problems for the bigwigs. Prince Martin and former Atenean Nicko Bahia look to be the main guys for UST, while Arwin Margallo and Keanu Asistio are tagged to carry the load for Adamson.
- NU underscored its dominance again by running over the Chiefs. Ray Parks was his all-around self anew, while Emmanuel Mbe continued lording over the shaded lane. This time, its Jeoff Javillonar and Mark De Guzman who helped with the scoring, combining for 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting.
- San Beda had a blistering start before letting the Fighting Maroons claw their way back in the final frame. Still, the Red Lions proved to be too strong as they rallied for their fourth straight win behind Ola Adeogun’s double-double, and Baser Amer’s sterling playmaking. Amer looks set for a breakout season as he seems to be enjoying more freedom in the backcourt under coach Ronnie Magsanoc.
- The Maroons were, well, themselves here. That is to say there were flashes of brilliance sprinkled amongst a field of underachievement. They are still infatuated with shooting the three, but it doesn’t mean they have become better at it. UP was just 3-of-21 from beyond the arc, with Mike Silungan laying a big, fat egg in 7 tries. A bright spot, however, is their defense. UP forced 24 San Beda errors compared to just 13 on their own end.
- After 4 games, the 5-peat seeking Eagles still don’t look scary. They let the Growling Tigers hang around and almost paid for it again. Only 11 guys were fielded today, with Greg Slaughter, Zags Gonzaga, Ryan Buenafe, Kiefer Ravena, Nico Salva, and Juami Tiongson all getting heavy minutes. It looks like they didn’t pull any punches against UST, and still they won by just 2. I think this is more a testament to UST’s not-so-hyped strength rather than Ateneo’s gathering-some-hype weakness. Still, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Eagles blow a team out for good measure.
- The Tigers are entering Season 75 as one of the deepest teams, and that’s even without Camus. Karim Abdul, Melo Afuang, Kevin Ferrer, and Paolo Pe make an imposing and experienced frontline, while Jeric Teng, Jeric Fortuna, Aljohn Mariano, Tata Bautista and a recovering Ed Daquioag should make up a noteworthy backcourt. I think Pido has another Final Four berth waiting for him come September.
- Some people have been saying Ateneo’s weak spot is at the PG position. Juami Tiongson and Nico Elorde certainly won’t make any of the other 7 UAAP teams cringe in their kicks, but I believe this is such an underrated duo. They certainly won’t light up the scoreboard, but I think they’ll provide the intangibles when needed. Against UST, they combined for 39 minutes, producing 0 points, but they did grab 5 rebounds, dish out 6 assists, and, get this, committed just 1 turnover. Not stellar, but not exactly weak, either. In contrast, Fortuna and Bautista committed 3 turnovers against just 1 assist in 44 minutes. Give them some time and I’m sure Juami and Nico will rise to the occasion.
